- Spending habits, debt and credit card facts
- Ways to budget and ‘journal’ our purchases for money management
- Making your money make money
- Talents and skills for career goals
These workshops will be divided into two age groups: 11-15 and 16-20. All material
covered will be age appropriate.
All workshops will be 3 hours in length and held in the Santa Clarita Valley area.
A study conducted by Capitol One Finance, not too long ago, reported that 87 percent of college students and 90 percent of high school students rely on their parents for financial guidance.
In the Jump$tart Coalition survey, only 26% of 13 to 21 year-olds reported that their parents actively taught them how to manage money.
College students are swimming in debt. In fact, 78% of college undergraduates have credit cards. Of those, 13% have credit card debt of $3,000 to $7,000. With an average of 3 credit cards and an average credit debt of $2,748, it would take 21 years to pay off, if minimum only payments were made.
This is scary stuff! We need to get our kids involved with money at an early stage and continue talking about it, much like we discuss drinking, smoking and drugs.
“The financial preparedness of our nation’s youth is essential to their well-being and of vital importance to our economic future,” Bernanke said at the Fed event on financial literacy.
